Equality and Diversity

Nobody should be denied opportunities because of their gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion/belief, or age. This principle underpins the work of CWDC.

Legislation

Legislation requires CWDC to make a number of proactive steps to end discrimination. This body of law has been built up over a number of years. To ensure compliance with the laws CWDC have developed equality practice by creating a bank of equality polices in relation to the acts of Parliament.

The following is not a comprehensive list but is illustrative of the equality framework within which CWDC operates.

  • The Equal Pay Act (EPA) 1970 (and as amended)
  • The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (SDA) (and as amended)
  • The Race Relations Act (RRA) 1976 (and as amended)
  • The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 (and as amended)
  • The Employment Rights Act 1996 (and as amended by the Employment Relations Act 1999)
  • The Sex Discrimination 1999 (Gender Reassignment) Regulations
  • The Employment Act 2002
  • The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003
  • The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003
  • The Employment Equality (Sex Discrimination) Regulations 2005
  • The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2005
  • The Equality Act 2006

 Equality Duties

CWDC became an Executive Non Departmental Public Body (ENDPB) on the 1st April 2008. As a public sector organisation, CWDC now has additional legal duties relating to race, gender and disability. Our obligations within each area focus on:

  • promoting equality of opportunity
  • promoting good relations
  • promoting positive attitudes
  • eliminating harassment, and eliminating unlawful discrimination.

These obligations are set out in the Race Equality Duty (2001), the Disability Equality Duty (2005) and the Gender Equality Duty (2007).

CWDC’s Commitment

CWDC’s Corporate Plan 2008-2011 sets out our vision and objectives for the next three years.  On page 9 of the Plan our three key values are:-

  • Inclusive: Equality & Diversity
  • Partnership: Working with Children Young People, Families and stakeholders
  • Excellence: Promoting quality and challenging standards

CWDC will therefore ensure that its key value of equality and diversity is incorporated throughout the organisation in all areas of delivery.
