What will its role be for Educational Psychologists?

From April 2012 the Teaching Agency will be responsible for managing a training programme for those entering the educational psychology profession. In practice, that means implementing the arrangements for the initial training of educational psychologists and ensuring that those in the existing scheme successfully complete their training.

DfE: Developing Sustainable Arrangement for the Initial Training of Educational Psychologists
In November 2011, the DfE published a review into the training of educational psychologists,the DfE recognised that educational psychologists have a valuable role in working with children and families in schools, and as part of early intervention projects.

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Green Paper
The current SEN Green Paper is looking at a wide range of issues for children with SEN and disabilities, from assessment and identification to funding and educational provision. Key to these areas of reform will be educational psychologists, and DfE is exploring work out how to make best use of their skills.

Department of Health: No health without mental health
A cross government mental health strategy for people of all ages that stressed the importance of promoting good mental health and early intervention. To support this strategy, significant investment is being made into Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT), including those for children and young people. There is also continuing investment through the Early Intervention Grant of Targeted Mental Health in Schools for young people aged 5 to 13 and their families. This is an area to which educational psychologists may contribute, and it will be important to consider this in ensuring that the training provision adapts to such opportunities.
