What are Foundation degrees?

Foundation degrees are higher education qualifications that are designed with employers as an alternative to the traditional degree programme and delivered in partnership with employers and Higher Education providers (Universities and Colleges) to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills for employment and to further career choices.  Foundation degrees are awarded by universities and require equivalent standards of academic attainment as the second year of an honours degree.

How is the course structured?

Combining work based learning with academic study, Foundation degrees offer employers the opportunity to enhance staff training and development with minimal disruption to the business operation with many courses providing flexible teaching arrangements such as part-time, evening or block release attendance at college or university, distance learning or via the internet.

Flexible study methods make them ideal for people already in work, unemployed people, or those wanting to embark on a career change.

For current employees, Foundation degrees offer relevant, valuable professional learning and development opportunities.

How long is the course of study?

A full time Foundation degree course will usually take two years to complete; a part-time Foundation degree course may take longer.  Your local Higher Education provider will be able to provide you with specific information on course length.

After completing their Foundation degree students are eligible to go on to study for an Honours Degree or to other professional qualifications.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no set entry requirements. The university or college offering the course will decide if you are eligible. Appropriate experience may be more relevant than educational qualifications but check with the institution as some courses have specific requirements.

What are the progression routes from Foundation degree?

On completion of a Foundation degree, there is the opportunity to progress to a full Honours degree with just a further 12-15 months full-time study, (this can also be done on a part-time basis over a longer period of time).

Foundation degree graduates can also progress on to further professional qualifications. For those working in Early Years, the Foundation degree provides the required qualification level to gain entry to Early Years Professional Status.
