Return to social work pilot

CWDC, in partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families, is developing a pilot programme to support registered and experienced social workers to return to practice.

This programme will provide advice and practical support on how to update your skills in finding a position within a children and families setting.

The programme will provide a package of support including a series of refresher training workshops in current social work theory and practice. Initially this programme will begin in the London and the south east regions from September 2009. Further plans are being made to launch in eastern, west midlands, north west and Yorkshire & Humberside regions from January 2010 and east midlands, north east and south west regions from September 2010.

If you are interested in getting involved with this programme and would like to receive further information, please phone 0300 123 1220 (calls will be charged at a local rate).

What can I do now?

Re-registration

If your registration with the General Social Care Council (GSCC) has lapsed, you will need to re-register in order to practice. Further information about re-registration is available on the GSCC website.

General Social Care Council codes of practice
These UK-wide codes of practice for social care workers and employers provide a clear guide for all those who work in social care, setting out the standards of practice and conduct workers and their employers should meet. All registrants will be required to comply with the codes as a condition of ongoing registration. To view the codes of practice, go to www.gscc.org.uk/codes.

Skills and knowledge

The following NQSW publication will give you an idea of what skills and knowledge you will need to practice social work in a children and families' setting.

The outcome statements and guidance set out what newly qualified social workers (NQSW) are expected to know, understand and be able to do by the end of their first year as a social worker in children's services. You can find all these documents in the newly qualified social workers section.
